figured i should write a quick update on whats been going on in my life!
will and i are planning to move out to oakland at the end of august/beginning of september. we will have approximately $17,000 saved by then so i'm hoping that is a big enough cushion for us to get back on our feet. people have been saying it will take around six months to find a job in our fields so that should keep us going for at least six months unemployment. i'm hoping it doesn't take that long to find a job though...i have not been without a job since high school so it is an adventure that i am both really looking forward to but also dreading! i just don't like having that much uncertainity in my life.
the plan is to ship most of our things to oakland where they can stay in storage until we find our apartment. and then the other stuff will be coming with us when we drive across america! we are stopping in d.c. for a couple days to visit will's mom and then going to west virginia to visit will's dad. we will probably drive through the dakotas but i am hoping to stop in oklahoma to maybe visit my cousin and his wife. we really don't have a set plan yet - it's really all up in the air at this point!
in other news, my eldest sister brianne is getting married to her girlfriend in six days! my mom and i are making her wedding cake so i have been up to my elbows in frosting these past few weeks. i am looking forward to seeing my family and friends but i am NOT looking forward to actually making these cakes! my mom is insisting on baking them from scratch but i fear that they will not rise or break apart and we might have to just buy a bunch of cake mixes! luckily will's mom (who is a caterer) is coming up on friday so she will thankfully be able to help us out with the preparation. other then that, i am just praying that it doesn't rain on saturday!
i am mostly looking forward to seeing my aunt sherri and my cousins jenny and kathleen who live in seattle. i have not seen them since i was in 8th grade - that was almost 13 years ago!!! we keep in touch on myspace but it will be so much better to see them in person. and of course, i am SOOOO excited that my best friend sal is coming up from florida for the wedding. he has not been back to connecticut since he moved almost six years ago. he is doing everyone's hair for the wedding and i know we are all gonna look fantastic after he's finished with us!
the only thing that i am truly worried about though is my health! i have had a nasty cough for the past two weeks that doesn't seem to be getting any better. i'm going to see the doctor's this afternoon and i am PRAYING that they give me some actual drugs instead of telling me to "treat the symptons" with cough drops and sudafed. i don't want to be wheezing through the ceremony or on the dance floor!
hope all you voxers are doing well and loving life!
will's birthday was back on april 14th but i never posted about it!
i wanted to make a very special birthday cake for his birthday using my newly acquired cake decorating skills. the initial design i came up with was to have seahorses on the top of the cake spelling out 25 (thats how old he was turning). will thought the seahorses were "too girly" and we got in a bit of a row over the design. i kept the seahorses, despite his protests, but i worked in his three additonal demands: (1) it had to be "manly" (2) it had to have a shark and (3) he wanted his face on it.
this is what i came up with!
demand #2 - shark!!!
half eaten arm that the shark ate
hmm that fellow looks familiar...
will's frosting portrait!!!
the rest of will's mangled body!
side by side comparison
even though the premise of the cake was sick & twisted - will loved it!
happy 25th darling!!!!
i hope your birthday wish came true! love you!
this is a cake i did awhile ago for my boyfriend's "fraternity" Cleo of Alpha Chi. i say that in quotes because cleo is technically a literary society. will was away all weekend for cleo's initiation and i had to practice frosting a cake so i made a cake for everyone to eat!
i wrote CLEO AX in white and then i applied the red!
then the yellow
then the blue...
and finished it off with the flowers!
unfortch my mom hasn't being doing so well in the class because her arthritis makes it hard for her to squeeze the frosting bag for very long. i'm trying to make up for it by learning as much as possible in the short time that we have. either way, it has been nice to spend some quality time with my mom and it has definitley helped us to bond these past few weeks. so at least i will have some fond memories to take home from the class, even if the wedding cake turns into a disaster!
we finished our third class yesterday and we finally learned how to make roses! it's the most complicated thing we will learn in course I.
not bad for my first try, right? my mom and i are gonna make a batch of frosting this weekend so we can practice more on our rose technique.
finally, we also learned how to make this clown figure. the body of the clown is made of frosting and our teacher provided us with clown heads to top it off. everyone in class agreed that clowns were scary and i don't think anyone will be making a clown cake soon! but, it's still a good skill to learn i guess!
my christmas was a mixed bag this year. my mom has been sick for the past few months with a skin disease which makes her bonkers. she is taking this steroid called prednisone that is basically speed. she has been home sick from work but because she is such a work-a-holic, she can't just sit down and relax (and also because she's on SPEED). she seriously has not stopped baking and cooking since she started this medicine! she made so much food for christmas that we couldn't finish it all. she made three pies the week BEFORE christmas to test out her recipes! she woke me up this past monday morning because she was using the food processor to make pie crust at 3AM IN THE MORNING!>!>! the itching on her skin is really bad and on top of it, she has been getting no sleep because the medication hops her up. so i think she was certifiable insane during the holidays...which of course made the rest of the family crazy!
my relationship with her has been even more strained since i have been living at home but mostly because of her medical problems. so yeah, we got in a big fight on christmas. it was not a good scene. i was a really big jerk to her and i almost ruined christmas for the family. i don't really want to get into here. i'm not proud of it but at the same time, my mom and i needed to get some things hashed out. we still have not fully talked about what happened but we are slowly on the mend.
despite that, i still had an enjoyable time visiting with my sisters while they were home. i also helped my mom bake and decorate the house and it really did help us get into the festive spirit.
this is the real tree that we got. we usually go out and cut a tree down but my parents went the easy way this year and just picked one from the lot. they learned their lesson though because the tree they picked out was bent at the top! my mom still managed to decorate it beautifully - this is her victorian themed tree. it looks much prettier in person - i love all the ribbon cascading down!
another tree in the kitchen - i got this one at borders for my mom this year.
this tiny one has roses to match the decor of the bathroom!
mom hung our real stockings in the bathroom this year haha
a santa clause that sara made in middle school
my sister bree had a LITTLE too much drink that night!
sara and yami wearing their matching sweaters on christmas eve
i made gingerbread men on christmas eve
all of the gingerbread men
i had a frosting accident!
